Bitcoin hits kiosks in North Carolina grocery stores

GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT) – Bitcoin is currently the most popular form of cryptocurrency. Now it is starting to become more accessible in North Carolina. But there are questions as to whether this currency is more of a risk than a reward.

Bitcoin is a digital currency founded in 2008. There are 21 million bitcoins in the world, which means that it is a fixed and limited form of currency that should keep its value stable.

People keep track of transactions through an online ledger called a blockchain. It is anonymous, only the transaction history can be viewed through the online registry.

Supporters point out that it is decentralized, meaning that no third parties are involved, such as banks or governments, and call it the future of currency. Some experts warn that the currency is too volatile for the average person to examine.

You are able to move bitcoin from any phone, from any computer to any other in the world. So people use it as a medium of exchange for payments and remittances.

It’s hard to imagine that if you go to a car dealership and want to put the down payment in ten thousand dollars, bitcoin, the moment you walk in the door, it’s worth twenty percent more or ten percent of less.

Haiyong Liu, President of the Economics Department of the University of East Carolina

You can mine bitcoin by solving complex algorithms or buying it now at select Harris Teeter and Food Lion stores through Coinstar and MoneyGram kiosks.
