The mysterious dogecoin whale which holds more than 28% of the cryptocurrency’s circulating supply saw the value of its holdings drop 67% from its peak, to $ 8.2 billion on Monday.
The address of the whale has nearly 37 billion dogecoins, which were worth more than $ 24 billion in early May. But a large-scale crypto collapse has caused the value of the memes-inspired cryptocurrency to drop sharply in recent weeks.
The enthusiasm around dogecoin peaked around the same time that Tesla CEO Elon Musk hosted “Saturday Night Live” and referred to dogecoin in a skit, as many crypto traders had anticipated. . But since then, little has been able to stimulate demand for the cryptocurrency, and 5 billion dogecoins are emerging each year.
The dogecoin whale has not lost holdings since the cryptocurrency peaked at $ 0.74 last month. In fact, the address has constantly added dogecoin in small increments. On Monday, the address added a dogecoin to its wallet. This followed the addition of various amounts of “memes” including 4.20 dogecoins on June 10 and 6.9 dogecoins on June 9.
A crypto expert has stated that the dogecoin whale is most likely a cryptocurrency exchange. There has also been speculation that Robinhood is behind the dogecoin address.
Despite the decline of dogecoin, many still see the potential for cryptocurrency to retain its usefulness as a viable form of payment. Several companies now accept dogecoin, including the Dallas Mavericks of the NBA and the Oakland Athletics of the MLB.
Several people have recently responded to Musk’s call to improve dogecoin as a payment method. Charles Hoskinson, the creator of Cardano, said that, if improved, dogecoin could have potential for real-world use.
“Dogecoin is a reasonable target for someone to fix it and turn it into an interesting cryptocurrency,” Hoskinson said in a podcast Friday. “My hope is that a compromise can be made where real developers step in and they start working on doge to create some utility and utility for it, so at least it has a floor value and won’t crumble.”
As dogecoin volatility is expected to continue, so too is the resilience of the mysterious dogecoin whale. Despite dogecoin’s 70% decline since its peak, the cryptocurrency is up 4.508% since the start of the year.
