Self-proclaimed Bitcoin creator defends London court victory over crypto copyright

Craig Wright, the British computer scientist who claims to have created bitcoin, claims that a victory in the UK High Court over the copyright of the original white paper on cryptocurrencies is a critical step in his attempt to recognition.

Over ten years ago, a white paper was published under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, describing the first specification and the first proof of concept for bitcoin. Nakamoto passed away several years later, until Wright appeared to claim the nickname in 2016.

Nakamoto’s identity remains highly contested, as does Wright’s role at the center of several bitcoin-related lawsuits.

A June 28 battle in London courts between Wright and the anonymous operator of the bitcoin.org website, known as Cobra, focused on Wright’s claim that Cobras’ hosting of the book white Bitcoin on its website was copyright infringement.

The conclusion of the case resulted in a default judgment in favor of Wrights, after Cobra and a representative chose to remain anonymous and not present an oral defense.

What’s interesting to me about the Monday hearing is that @CobraBitcoin didn’t even attempt to submit any documents to confirm their comments about me or to back up their past claims that I’m not Satoshi, Wright told Financial News in written comments, referring to Cobras’ username on Twitter.

By default, therefore, my claim that they infringed my copyright was confirmed.

Cobra has been ordered to remove the white paper from access in the UK via bitcoin.org and to post a copy of the court order on the website for the next six months.

In statements posted to Twitter after the hearing ended, Cobra said the outcome represented a system in which justice depends on whoever holds the biggest wallet.

I don’t think you can get a better publicity for why Bitcoin is needed than what happened today, they wrote. The rules enforced by crypto are far superior to the rules based on anyone who can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in court.

A separate case to challenge Wrights’ claim to the High Court system is ongoing, led by Copa, a non-profit organization with large member companies including Coinbase, Square, Kraken and MicroStrategy.

Wright told Financial News that the lawsuits gave him the opportunity to publicly present his overall mission of educating governments, regulators and investors that the current status of bitcoin as a preferred investment for prone traders to digital is not faithful to its original vision.

I will continue to take action when developers of alternative assets promote or misrepresent those assets as Bitcoin when they do not match what I stated in my white paper, he added.

I’m determined to bring to light a world where I feel my original concept has been twisted and hijacked by people with different goals and interests.

As part of the default judgment, Cobra was also ordered to pay a deposit of 35,000 to cover Wrights’ costs of the proceedings.

Cobra said they would be happy to pay the costs of Wrights in bitcoin, transferring them to the digital wallet address associated with Nakamoto’s creation of one of the first blocks of bitcoin.
