Greenidge Generation, a bitcoin mining company, has announced that it will begin operations in South Carolina this year Despite Greenidge’s statement that it aims to be a leader in green power generation and cryptocurrency operations, Critics such as Seneca Lake Guardian say company is just transitioning from coal to natural gas produced by fracking Greenidge is exploring mining in South Carolina, as many companies ostensibly fleeing Chinese regulatory crackdown are settling in in Texas
Greenidge Generation, a bitcoin mining company, said it will begin operations in South Carolina as early as this year. Greenidge announced on Friday that it would operate at a carbon-neutral cryptocurrency mining plant in Spartanburg. The company announced that it has signed a letter of intent for a 10-year lease with LSC Communications, a printing company on the outskirts of South Carolina city, where it plans to start mining for cryptocurrency in late 2021 or early 2022.
According to Greenidge, the site has the capacity to generate 80 megawatts (MW), two-thirds of which come from carbon-free sources such as nuclear power. Greenidge CEO Jeff Kirt said the move was a step towards the development of environmentally friendly Bitcoin mining in the United States.

For its operations in New York, the company currently has a power plant, which it plans to expand to 85 MW by 2022. Despite Greenidge’s announcement that it wants to be a pioneer in the production of green energy and cryptocurrency operations, critics like the environmental organization Seneca Lake Guardian contend the company is just switching from coal to natural gas produced by hydraulic fracturing. As Greenidge contemplates mining in South Carolina, several companies allegedly escaping Chinese regulatory crackdown are establishing themselves in Texas. Blackware, a cryptocurrency mining company, announced Thursday that it will expand operations into Kentucky, which has some of the lowest industrial energy prices in the United States. Greenidge, on the other hand, sparked considerable debate over the most visible of a handful of new bitcoin mining farms targeted by state lawmakers earlier this year in upstate New York. It was among a number of miners who announced their carbon offset program.
As China tightens its domestic sector, bitcoin miners are expanding their operations in the United States and abroad. Many North American miners have banded together to create new energy mix reporting standards since regulatory requirements from US authorities have become increasingly stringent. The Greenidge spokesperson declined to say how much the company is paying for the Spartanburg lease.
The LSC site is a decommissioned printing plant that once used 80 megawatts of electricity, an amount Greenidge hopes to increase. The Dresden facility was mining $ 50,000 worth of bitcoin every day using 15 megawatts in March.
