The Philippine National Stock Exchange wants to bring crypto assets under its jurisdiction, while the Vietnamese central bank has been asked to implement a pilot program for cryptocurrencies. Both of these countries are looking to introduce new regulations to bring cryptocurrencies into the mainstream. The Philippines and Vietnam have the highest rate of cryptocurrency usage in Asia. And, they both seem more optimistic about digital tokens compared to their larger Asian counterparts – India and China. China and India are not the only Asian countries grappling with the plight of cryptocurrencies in their countries. Smaller players like the Philippines and Vietnam are entering the arena and the popularity of digital tokens continues to increase.
According to the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE), cryptocurrencies are an asset class they can no longer afford to ignore. And, they think bringing the crypto framework to the existing exchange would be safer than people who trade on foreign exchanges.
Meanwhile, Vietnamese Prime Minister – Pham Minh Chinh – reportedly asked the country’s central bank to conduct a study on cryptocurrency so that the government can run its own pilot program from 2021 to 2023. These two countries have seen a massive increase in their citizens using cryptocurrencies over the past year. They have the highest cryptocurrency usage rate in the world, after Nigeria, according to the results of the Statista Global Consumer Survey. Cryptostatcdn Vietnam’s plans are still a bit unclear
According to a report by Vietnam News, Chính asked the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) to study digital currencies and conduct a pilot program. However, the exact details of what Vietnam is considering are unclear.
Publicity
Central banks around the world – including the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) – have been considering blockchain-based implementations for fiat currencies, and Chính’s decision could be much the same. He asked the bank to think about digital currencies as part of Vietnam’s e-government development strategy.
That said, the move represents a change for Vietnam’s regulatory scenario so far. The country’s finance ministry created a group to study virtual assets in April last year. The report suggests the new study will help the country find “the good and bad” of cryptos.
The Philippines wants a digital token on their stock exchange
The Philippine National Stock Exchange wishes to integrate crypto trading within its scope.
“If there was to be a crypto exchange, it would have to be done at the PSE. Why? First, it’s because we have the commercial infrastructure. But more importantly, we will be able to have guarantees of investor protection, especially with a product like crypto, ”Ramon Monzon, President and CEO of the PSE, told CNN last week.
He pointed out that while price volatility in crypto trading can lead to instant wealth, it can also lead to instant poverty. But, for now, the PSE is awaiting guidance from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on how trading in crypto or digital assets will be governed.
Currently, the country’s regulations do not allow the PES to put in place better guarantees for investors or to put digital currencies like Bitcoin under its jurisdiction.
The Philippines and Vietnam are on a different path than India and China
While the Philippines and Vietnam are not big enough to set the stage for Asian economies, their regulatory decisions appear to go against two of the continent’s largest economies. Besides China, India is also considering a bill regulating digital currencies within its borders.
Stock exchanges in India have struggled to manage their operations after the RBI issued informal guidelines to lenders in May that caused them to withdraw services from some of the country’s largest stock exchanges. China has also taken similar steps causing major crypto miners and exchanges to reconsider the way they do business.
If India and China come out against these currencies, the two smaller countries could become havens for crypto companies by acting favorably towards them.
