Bitcoin.org Owner Reports Site Hit With ‘Absolutely Massive’ DDoS Attack

A website aimed at supporting the development of Bitcoin has reportedly been hit by a DDoS attack.

Cbra, the pseudonym of the owner of Bitcoin.org, reported on Twitter today that the website was hit with an absolutely massive distributed denial of service attack, or DDoS, as well as a ransom demand for an amount not disclosed of Bitcoin (BTC). At the time of publication, Bitcoin.org is still accessible.

While DDoS attacks previously targeted major crypto exchanges, it seems somewhat unusual for attackers to attack a site like Bitcoin.org, which contains no information about funds or users, only open source information about the. BTC blockchain and cryptocurrency. The website was the target of a similar DDoS attack in December, which prevented users from accessing Bitcoin Core software for a few hours.

Major DDoS attacks last year targeted Binance, OKEx, and Bitfinex. At the time, CEO Changpeng Zhao claimed that the attack on Binance was undertaken by its competitors with the aim of damaging its reputation rather than stealing funds.

This isn’t the first time the website has been in the news in recent weeks. Bitcoin.org has also been the target of legal threats from Craig Wright, the man who claims to have created Bitcoin. Last week, a UK court ruled in Wright’s favor alleging copyright infringement against Bitcoin.org for hosting the Bitcoin whitepaper Cbra did not provide a defense against the lawsuit.

“I didn’t show up because defending against nonsense is a waste of time,” said the owner of Bitcoin.org at the time.

Following the court ruling, Bitcoin.org blocked access to the Bitcoin Core software download for any user with a UK-based IP address. The project also removed all links to the Bitcoin whitepaper.
