Square to create hardware wallet for Bitcoin

[ad_1]

Square will create a hardware wallet for Bitcoin, the company’s hardware manager Jesse Dorogusker said on Thursday. CEO Jack Dorsey, who is also the CEO of Twitter, said in June (in a tweetstorm, naturally) that the company was considering creating one, and now Square has made the decision to move forward.

We decided to create a hardware wallet and a service to make bitcoin custody more common, Dorogusker said. Well, keep asking and answering questions openly. This community response to our discussion thread on this project has been impressive – encouraging, generous, collaborative and inspiring.

Dorsey has made no secret of his interest in bitcoin. His Twitter bio only says #bitcoin, he showed a bitcoin clock during his testimony to Congress, and he even said he would work on bitcoin if he didn’t work at Square and Twitter. So it is perhaps not surprising that Squares’ efforts go more towards a hardware wallet for cryptocurrency.

This hardware wallet won’t be Squares’ first cryptocurrency-focused product. You can already buy and sell bitcoin from the Squares Cash app.
