When will US investors get a Bitcoin ETF?

[ad_1]

Investors are hungry for Bitcoin. Still, if you want to invest in digital currency today, you need to do everything you can to do so. This is why financial firms are pushing regulators to approve the first Bitcoin ETFs in the United States

These funds would be very similar to how gold ETFs gave investors the ability to invest in gold and follow the price of the precious metal without going out and ordering gold coins to be mailed, said Greg King, CEO of Osprey Funds. In June, Ark Invest filed a disclosure with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for a Bitcoin ETF called Ark 21Shares Bitcoin ETF. There have been eight other Bitcoin ETFs deposited with the agency, CNBC reported. Recently, the SEC deferred its decision on asset manager VanEck’s ETF, saying the agency needed more time to gather comments on the potential for digital currency market manipulation and, by extension, fund. Just a little later, the SEC delayed the decision on another Bitcoin ETF, Valkyrie Digital Assets.

Trading apps like Robinhood and Webull now offer crypto trading, and even once-installed robo-advisers are trying to join in on the action. Meanwhile, financial advisers are waiting for the government’s green light on Bitcoin ETFs before recommending the digital asset to clients.

But cryptocurrency is a risky business, with tons of volatility and speculation. In April, the price of Bitcoin peaked at around $ 63,000 per coin, and now – just three months later – it sits at around $ 33,000. Here’s what you need to know about the plans of a Bitcoin ETF:

What would a Bitcoin ETF look like?

ETFs are a way of bringing together various securities into a single fund, which is treated the same as a stock market share in that you can buy and sell it as the price moves throughout. throughout the day. An ETF can hold Bitcoin itself or Bitcoin futures contracts (futures contracts allow investors to speculate on future prices), King said.

Additionally, an ETF can be traded like stocks and bonds. Instead of having to open a separate account to track individual cryptocurrency prices, investors could likely invest in the ETF through their brokerage firms like Fidelity and Charles Schwab, said Ben Weiss, CEO of CoinFlip, who provides Bitcoin ATMs.

“There will be people who love crypto who never come in because they won’t feel comfortable holding 20 different coins on a jumpdrive,” Weiss says. “An ETF is a way for people to invest in cryptocurrency without having to buy it directly and without having to keep it themselves.”

Why has the government not approved a Bitcoin ETF?

The SEC has raised concerns about Bitcoin, including that investors should be wary of volatility and the potential for fraud. There is cause for concern.

“Bitcoin itself is a rather dubious proposition,” says James Angel, professor of finance at Georgetown University. No one really knows who created Bitcoin, a few individuals hold a lot of coins, trading can be sketchy, and there are negative environmental impacts. In addition to this, cybercriminals use cryptocurrency.

“This has only caused enforcement problems for the SEC and for that reason they have a very skeptical attitude,” Angel says. (The SEC did not respond to Money’s request for comment.)

There’s also the fact that Bitcoin is technically not a security, and the SEC tends to regulate securities. But as the U.S. government continues to deny a Bitcoin ETF, other countries are moving forward. Canada, for example, approved the first Bitcoin ETF in North America earlier this year. For U.S. investors, foreign ETFs are treated as overseas investments, which can lead to complications such as the need for special clearances from certain brokerage firms.

“The United States is very noticeably lagging behind,” says Timothy Spangler, partner at Dechert LLP, where he leads the law firm’s blockchain digital asset practice.

When will there be a Bitcoin ETF?

When Gary Gensler, who previously taught blockchain and digital currency courses at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, became chairman of the SEC earlier this year, crypto fans were thrilled that the changing of the guard could help their Bitcoin ETF cause. .

“Gensler understands blockchain and understands crypto and I know it’s just started, so I hope to be optimistic,” Weiss said.

Another argument that a Bitcoin ETF will happen this year is that if you take a look at all of the digital currency issues that the SEC is currently facing, including some allegations of serious irregularities, this one would be fairly easy to cross the line. ‘arrival, Spangler said. But on the other hand, while some have said that a Bitcoin ETF would be seen as a sign of maturity for the market, it is not necessarily time for retail investors to be able, if they wish, to buy directly from bitcoins currently, he adds.

King is not convinced that we should expect a Bitcoin ETF this year. He says 2022 is probably the first, but it’s still “a question mark.”

Some of the issues and concerns highlighted by the SEC are still relevant today, such as the fact that most Bitcoin volumes take place outside the United States and therefore outside of US regulatory oversight. It takes time to determine if these issues have been resolved, says King, who plans to convert the Osprey Bitcoin Trust to an ETF whenever possible.

“I’m not sure the top priority for the administration is to determine if a Bitcoin ETF makes sense,” King said.
