Blocknative Raises $ 12 Million to Track In-Flight Crypto Transactions

Blocknative, a cryptographic infrastructure data dredge that monitors transactions pending confirmation, raised $ 12 million in its most recent funding round, CoinDesk has learned.

The “in-flight transaction” tracker has received Series A investments from Foundry Group, Blockchain Capital Robot Ventures and others, CEO Matt Cutler told CoinDesk. Rho Capital’s Ignition fund led the way. Last July, Blocknative raised $ 5 million in a funding round.

Blocknative’s tools monitor the mempool – digital waiting rooms for crypto transactions not yet validated – to get a feel for on-chain upcoming activity. Shedding light on this “dark forest” can help projects estimate gasoline costs, detect attackers, and track “in-flight transactions” that have yet to be settled in their wallets, Cutler said.

Top tier bots on the Ethereum network have become a problem for professional traders.

Mempool’s data is publicly available, but Cutler said it was nearly impossible for lay people to analyze it. Only a handful of companies in the space are currently building tools for the mempool, he said, but he expects that to change as the market grows.

The market has so far responded with enthusiasm. Annual recurring revenue has increased by 1,500% with the listing of well-known projects such as Compound, Curve, Zapper and Yearn Finance over the past 12 months. About 40% of Blocknative customers are “builders” like them, Cutler said. The remaining 60% are traders who hope to profit from mempool data.

“The trading category has grown very quickly – it’s basically started from scratch” at this point last year, Cutler said.

Altonomy, a New York-based crypto trading office, started using Blocknative eight months ago to confirm that its trades are running on decentralized exchanges, said Ricky Li, chief investment officer.

The story continues

“There are a lot of very basic things that you like to trade on a centralized exchange,” he said, offering order execution notifications as an example. “But on the DeFi side, if you’re trading 1 inch or Uniswap, you don’t have the luxury of that. We send an order, it’s like sending it to a black hole, ”he said.

Beyond “in-flight” order tracking. Li said Altonomy also leveraged the intelligence of mempool for a very significant advantage over ruthless digital trading rooms. “If we’re trying to put someone in the lead,” that’s helpful, he said.

A majority of the major decentralized financial protocol builders are also using Blocknative to consolidate their networks, according to Blockchain Capital partner Spencer Bogart, who sits on Blocknative’s board of directors.

“If you are very proactive in monitoring the mempool, you can run a blocking simulation platform to detect if any of these transactions” would pose a threat to the protocol once confirmed, he said.

Cutler plans to double Blocknative’s staff to 20 by the end of the year, with new hires in marketing, sales, C-suite, customer support and development.

“We are trying to build a real basic infrastructure that is going to be sustained and grow as the whole ecosystem develops,” he said.
