Watch 1,000 illegal Bitcoin PCs literally smashed, experience justice

According to Malaysian newspaper The Star (via The Block), eight people in Miri, Malaysia, have been accused of allegedly stealing electricity to power a massive bitcoin mining operation involving 1,069 PCs. Malaysia recently started cracking down on nationwide theft of electricity used for illegal bitcoin mining operations.

The CPs were confiscated during six raids on properties near an airport in the Sarawak region. The raids were carried out as part of a joint operation between the Malaysian authorities and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB). These suspects have reportedly found a way to siphon electricity from SEB power lines to power bitcoin mining machines, stealing nearly $ 2 million worth of electricity in three months.

Illegal bitcoin mining is nothing new in Malaysia. In March, a man was accused of stealing more than $ 2.2 million worth of electricity from energy company Tenaga Nasional Berhad. He is still on the run and wanted by the police. Mining cryptocurrency on this scale requires a huge amount of energy, which is a costly investment, so the theft of electricity is on the rise worldwide. An upcoming legal bitcoin mining operation in the United States will rely on a nuclear power plant.

“The theft of electricity for bitcoin mining activities has caused frequent blackouts and in 2021 three houses were razed (due to electrical fires) due to illegal connections to the power supply,” Miri’s police chief, ACP Hakemal Hawari, told The Star.

Currently, Miri Police are working on ways to increase detection of illegal wired connections for bitcoin mining activities.
