Gemini, the cryptocurrency exchange run by the Winklevoss twins, is building a base in Dublin to serve the European market.
S-based Gemini was founded in 2014 by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, known for their infamous dispute and $ 65 million legal settlement with Mark Zuckerberg.
Since then, the twins have gone crazy over bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
Last year, the company moved to the UK and obtained regulatory approval there as part of its European expansion plans.
He has chosen Ireland as a bridgehead to expand his business in the EU and is seeking an e-money license from the Central Bank of Ireland that he can pass on to other EU markets.
She hired Gillian Lynch to run her Irish and European operations from Dublin. Lynch was previously COO of financial technology firm Leveris, which recently filed for bankruptcy and was responsible for retail planning at Bank of Ireland for several years.
The company has signed a number of other signatures, including a finance manager and a risk and compliance manager, and is hiring accounting managers and traders to handle orders on behalf of customers.
Gemini declined to comment on its Irish operations.
It also provides customers with a credit card to use their cryptocurrency and issues the Gemini Dollar, or GUSD, a stable coin pegged to the value of the US dollar.
Gemini touted itself as a rules-abiding cryptocurrency exchange and sought regulatory clearances early on in an effort to differentiate itself from other crypto firms in the early 2010s that were operating in a gray area.
In recent times, cryptocurrency exchanges have come under regulatory scrutiny. Main competitor Binance has been ordered to cease operations in the UK by the country’s financial watchdog and has received warnings from other national authorities.
