Local veteran explains how hackers stole more than $ 10,000 in Bitcoin

WAUSAU, Wisconsin (NBC 26) – A local veteran claims he was stolen thousands of dollars from his bank account and over $ 10,000 in Bitcoin. Karl Klimes says it happened when his computer was hacked, in just a few hours.

A week and a half ago, Klimes said he noticed his bank account was nearly empty when thousands of dollars suddenly disappeared. Additionally, the veteran says over $ 10,000 in Bitcoin also vanished overnight. Friends have since created a PayPal account for her to help her cope with the loss. “It was gone within hours from what I can see in the transaction logs,” says Klimes.

Klimes says someone managed to get their bank account information, usernames and passwords after downloading unknown software online.

“You can easily retrieve them in an email if you click the wrong link or if you go to a website with malicious code. “

The software that Klimes eventually found on his computer is known as the keylogger program, software that logs your most vulnerable information every step of the way.

“Keyloggers are software programs that either record the keyword keystrokes you make with your computer or possibly the clicks you make with your mouse,” explains UWO speaker Michael Patton.

Patton, who works at UWO’s College of Business, says it’s relatively easy to fall victim to this type of hack.

“It’s definitely something that’s pretty easy to do and doesn’t require a lot of technical expertise from the wrong actor.”

The best way to avoid this type of piracy is to not click on unfamiliar links, and to avoid downloading software that you are not 100 percent sure about. But if you do, Patton says you’ll want to deal with the error immediately.

“I would say if you think you have keylogging software on your system, you need to take it to a professional who can do a more thorough investigation for you,” Patton says.
