Crypto Dev thrown in jail for verifying his Coinbase account

Virgil Griffith, a prominent Ethereum cryptocurrency developer who had previously been accused of violating US sanctions against North Korea, is locked up again after apparently accessing his cryptocurrency wallet on Coinbase in May, reports Cointelegraph.

This decision would have constituted a violation of his bond. Griffith was remanded in custody today, but it’s still unclear if that’s because he violated his bail conditions, as CoinDesk points out.

He will now spend at least the next two months behind bars, according to Cointelegraph. In September, he will be tried for conspiring to violate sanctions with North Korea. If convicted, Hell faces up to 20 years in prison.

The developer reportedly contacted Coinbase to ask if he could remove the two-factor authentication security feature on his account because the FBI took my devices away, as cited by Cointelegraph.

The United States District Court for the Southern District of New York City filed an indictment against Griffith in January 2020, claiming he violated the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which allows the president to regulate commerce international in the event of a national emergency.

Prosecutors accused Griffith of knowingly conspiring with North Korea to circumvent sanctions on the nation by using cryptocurrencies possibly reflecting parts of the U.S. government’s long-held view that cryptocurrencies are a tool reserved for criminals and tax evasion.

As alleged, Virgil Griffith provided highly technical information to North Korea, knowing that this information could be used to help North Korea launder money and evade sanctions, US attorney Geoffrey Berman said. in a press release from the Department of Justice dating from his arrest. By doing so, Griffith compromised the sanctions that Congress and the President enacted to put maximum pressure on the dangerous North Korean regime.

Deputy Attorney General John Demers added that Griffith taught his audience how to use blockchain technology to evade sanctions after traveling to North Korea.

Griffith has since filed a motion to dismiss the conspiracy charges, Cointelegraph reports, saying his presentation was a very general speech based on publicly available information.

Prosecutors rejected the motion, comparing Griffith’s actions in explaining the science behind nuclear weapons to a conference of North Korean physicists, as US lawyers noted in a November 2020 court document cited by Cointelegraph.

The cryptocurrency community, however, has largely sided with Griffiths.

After allegedly gaining access to his Coinbase account earlier this year, Griffiths’ lawyers face a tougher battle to prove his innocence. His lawyers say he made the decision after consulting his lawyer. They also maintain that his family in Alabama contacted the exchange on his behalf.
