Former President Donald Trump on Friday complained about the failure of the Wyoming Legislature to pass legislation that could call for runoff elections in cases where no candidate receives the majority of the vote in a primary election.
You can read a bill rejected by lawmakers earlier this year, Senate File 145 here. The move lost to the Wyoming Senate earlier by a 15-14 vote. A legislative committee earlier this summer voted to draft two more runoff election bills.
Trump on Friday morning released the following statement:
Voters in the Greater State of Wyoming want clear majority election winners, and the only mechanism to achieve the majority of winners is a Run-Off Election, pitting the top two candidates against each other. Conservative Republicans in the Wyoming State Legislature such as Senator Bo Biteman and Representative Chip Nieman led this effort. Unfortunately and sadly for Wyoming voters, RINO State Legislators backed out, defeating the bills in the Run-Off Election. The easiest way to beat the pathetic Liz Cheney is by just having ONE conservative candidate run and WIN! The Wyoming Patriots will no longer stand for Nancy Pelosi and her new lapdog RINO Liz Cheney! “
RINO stands for Republicans In Name Only. It was used as an insult to Republican Party members who were said to be too moderate or who were elected as Republicans but then pursue policies that were more in line with the Democratic Party.
Trump and Cheney have been engaged in an ongoing war of words throughout the year.
Cheney, who voted for Trump’s impeachment in January, accused the former president of inciting a riot in January by his supporters at the Capitol in Washington DC Trump called Cheney a “RINO” and a “warmonger.” announced to run against Cheney in the Wyoming U.S. House Primary election next year.
But since most, if not all, of his challengers are running as Trump loyalists, some observers feel they will split the anti-Cheney vote, allowing him re-election by a plurality, but not a majority, in the primary election. . Opponents of the Wyoming runoff election pointed to the cost of holding an excessive election cycle as well as questions about the turnout of voters if such an election is held.
Some Wyoming supporters of the runoff election to state primaries also point to Mark Gordon’s victory in the 2018 GOP Gubernatorial Primary election, in which Gordon won the nomination while a field of candidates commonly perceived more Conservatives separate what could be a majority vote. .
Gordon was later elected governor. Trump did not mention Gordon in his statement.
