The DOJ Calls on the IRS to Release Donald Trump’s Tax Return to Congress

The Justice Department released a statement today calling on the IRS to release former President Donald Trump’s tax return.

The move comes a year after the Supreme Court said its accountants would have to share tax returns and other financial records with Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. because of a subpoena released by Vance as part of his criminal investigation into the Trump organization.

The discourse around the release of Trump’s tax returns has stood out as a feature of his presidency, with Trump changing his position on this issue on numerous occasions. In a new DOJ statement, the department’s legal counsel wrote that the House Ways and Means Committee made the request with “legitimate legislative intent.”

“In assessing whether the requested information can serve a legitimate legislative purpose, the Executive Branch should give due weight to the status of Congress as an equal branch of government,” the statement wrote. “The Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee has asked sufficient reasons for requesting the former President’s tax information.”
