The U.S. Department of Justice on Friday ordered the Internal Revenue Service to submit Donald Trumps ’tax return to a committee in the House, saying the panel had asked sufficient reasons for soliciting them.
The news was a second blow for Trump in hours, after DoJ memos were released revealing that as part of his campaign to overthrow his Joe Biden election defeat, he forced top officials to incorrectly mark the elections in 2020 as bad, then leave the rest to me.
House spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi applauded the DoJs order to the IRS to release Trump’s tax return in committee ways and means.

Once Democrats took control of the House in 2018, amid an investigation into Russia’s election disruption and relations between Trump and Moscow by special adviser, Robert Mueller, they began looking for court records.
Trump tried to keep the public on his tax return but the New York Times got some of the notes, which showed that Trump had paid no federal income taxes in the years before he entered the White House.
In a memo Friday, the DoJ Office of Legal Counsel said Neal, the Massachusetts congressman who heads the means and means committee, has garnered ample reasons for requesting former tax information.
Under federal law, the OLC said, the Treasury Department must provide information to the committee.
The 39-page memo was signed by Dawn Johnsen, who was installed by the Biden administration as the corresponding head of the OLC.
Trump treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin has said he will not give Trump tax returns because they are sought for compelling reasons.
The House way and means committee has been sued for records under a federal law that says the IRS must provide returns of any taxpayer to a great top lawmaker. The committee said it needed Trump’s taxes for an investigation into whether he complied with tax law.
Trump’s justice department defended Mnuchins ’denial and Trump intervened to try to prevent the materials from being returned to Congress. Under a court order from January, Trump will have 72 hours to protest after the Biden administration formally changed the government’s position on the lawsuit.
The Manhattan district attorney, Cyrus Vance Jr., obtained copies of Trump’s personal and tax records as part of a criminal investigation.
Trump tried to prevent his accountants from reaching the documents, taking the issue to the supreme court. The magistrates rejected Trumps argument that he has extensive immunity as president.
