Florida should plan for ‘hospital surge’ amid new wave of COVID-19, former Trump official says

“It’s too late” for Florida to mitigate the latest influx of COVID-19 “meaningfully,” Thomas Bossert, who served as former President Donald Trump’s town security adviser until 2018, tweeted Saturday.

The state is in “unchartered territory,” he explained, noting that it has only recorded the highest number of cases in the 24 hours since the pandemic began. More significantly, however, more than 10,000 people are currently hospitalized with an infection, which accounts for 83 percent of Florida’s ever-high pandemic. New York Times data shows hospitalization has been at 123 percent in the last 14 days, the fourth highest rate in the country.

Bossert warned that there is little Florida can do to stop the spread at this point although the data he presented does not provide a locality breakdown, so the study may not be applicable to every part of the state and instead should “change gears” and plan for a “hospital surge,” specifically when it comes to the child’s capacity.

It’s too late in FL to reduce significantly. FL has 2,038 in ICUs. FL needs to be positioned to deal with the potential of 3-4 weeks of overcrowded health care systems: plan for hospitalization, especially the child’s capacity. Neighboring states are strained and close by unable to help.
