Donald Don LaVerne Simmons, 82, of Marshalltown, formerly of Drakesville, passed away on Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown.
At the request of Don and his family, cremation rituals were performed under the care of Mitchell Family Funeral Home. The family life leadership celebration will take place on Saturday, Aug. 7 from 2-4 pm at Don’s residence and January An additional life leadership celebration will be held in Drakesville on the next date to be announced. Born November 22, 1938 in Drakesville, Don was the son of Donald Max and Lorene (Piper) Simmons. He grew up in Drakesville and graduated from Bloomfield High School, living there until he moved to Marshalltown in 1969. He delivered for Home Furniture before beginning his career at Lennox Industries, working 33 years before retiring. On April 1, 1989, Don was united in marriage to Jan (Funk) in Marshalltown. In retirement, they spent their winters in Florida, where he enjoyed many activities provided by their community. He especially enjoys throwing horses, visiting neighbors and walking with their beloved Sheltie, Prince.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 32 years, Jan; his daughters: Julie Simmons and Kathy Simmons; daughters: Donna Mathis and Sherri (Chris) Vogt; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great -grandchildren and his siblings: Donna (Gary) Eaves and Ronnie Simmons.
Don was preceded in death by his daughter Rita; his parents: Max and Lorene; his grandparents; a step-grandson in infancy and his faithful dog, Prince.
