The chargers provide an improved Donald Parham Jr. of a larger role-Daily News

The COSTA MESA Donald Parham Jr. didn’t have many chances to get receiving yards as a red-zone expert for the Chargers last season.

Parhams ’role is likely to expand this season as the 6-foot-8 tight end has done a lot of running with the ball in his hands through the first seven practice camp practices.

He disappeared from just seeing jump balls in the end zone as a mismatching nightmare to a yard-after-catch playmaker for quarterback Justin Herbert.

He’s a fast guy, tight end Charger said Jared Cook about Parham. I think he has the fastest time since we heard on the scanners this week. He was good at making just the opening run. Big man, big target.

Parham said he didn’t like the way he ended his first season with the Chargers last year and is focused this offseason on building lower body strength and improving knee movement. That led to Parham’s improvement as a route runner and being open to space.

Parham also acknowledged his improvements in chemistry that he built with Herbert in the offseason.

We spent a lot of time in the offseason making sure we got together and threw a little, Parham said. We want to put this together in the coming season, so we can make big plays throughout the year.

Parham joined Cook as one of the Herberts ’favorite targets in training, but Parham just didn’t see many opportunities because of his athleticism and size. He took steps as a blocker and could lead to more snaps during this time.

Last season, Parham only saw 20 targets and recorded 10 receives for 159 yards and three touchdowns.

I really have no other choice but to recover from it, Parham said of blocking. I definitely do that in my practice when I get those reps to make sure I’m working hard and practicing good habits.

Coach Kevin Koger concluded strongly that he said he has noticed many improvements at Parham since joining the Chargers staff this year.

He has a better athlete than you think for a man of 67, 68, Koger said. He has a good set of feet on him. He was able to bend better than many other 68 men, but that was (only) one of his strengths.

BULAGAS DAY OFF

Proper tackle Bryan Bulaga was not in training on Wednesday and it wasn’t because he finished the workout on Tuesday with his right hand wrapped, according to Chargers coach Brandon Staley.

Veterans day off for him, Staley said. Before (camp) started, we got together and actually mapped out his schedule. We wanted to get this first installation on the ground. It was the perfect first day for him before a day without a break.

Staley said he was not worried about leaving Bulaga in training on Tuesday with his hand wrapped around it.

Common O-line things, Staley said. Hell is back in the next practice.

The third year offensive conversation that Trey Pipkins filled for Bulaga in the team’s drills.

OTHER NOTES

The Chargers trained without a pad for the second consecutive day. Staley plans for the team to wear pads for the next three practices after Thursday’s holiday. “We really wanted our boys to be ready for the pads,” Staley said. “Then, when we get the pads, go. Establishing our tempo of training and routine, I think it’s important, that before, that we really established our way of doing things. I think we’ve done that. through the seven skills. ”…

Wide receivers Tyron Johnson, Jalen Guyton and cornerback Ryan Smith did not participate in training on Wednesday.

Rookie defensive back Mark Webb did not finish training because he wrapped his right foot. Before going out, Webb tipped a Chase Daniel pass that was blocked by cornerback John Brannon, who had two interceptions on Wednesday.

Rookie kicker Alex Kessman made all of his field goal attempts, with the longest going at 55 yards. Player Michael Badgley went 5 of 7 on his goal attempts.
