In what is clearly understood to make little sense, former President Donald Trump issued no statement following the U.S. national soccer team in America perhaps the most beloved national team in America that won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

Trump attributed the team that won bronze instead of gold to the fact that they were an awake group of radical Leftist Maniacs. He claims that everyone who woke up was bad, which includes our soccer team.

The former president also tried to facilitate his argument with Megan Rapinoe, whom he disrespected by refusing to say her name, who only called her a woman with purple hair. And, in a very clear indication that Trump was not watching the bronze medal against Australia, he accused Rapinoe of over -playing.

But to her the thing is: The U.S. women’s soccer team, and women’s soccer in general, has always modeled sports being the most progressive and strong. The political engagement of the players is a strength, not a weakness.

While it’s clear that Trumps ’argument is based on rhetoric and not fact, it’s also worth highlighting the ways the two teams that played for gold Friday, Canada and Sweden, openly support progressive ideals.

First, let’s dismiss this: It’s true the USWNT didn’t look good throughout the Olympics. They didn’t play as well as we’re used to seeing, due to a variety of factors, including a new coach, aging players and tough matches with high -level talent from around the world. But in the 4-3 victory over Australia, Rapinoe scored two goals. One of those goals was a corner kick; in 2012, he became the first to score from the corner of Olympic history. He did it a second time Thursday, which was a fantastic feat. Play too much he did not.

Before losing to Sweden in the opening round of the Tokyo Games, which split their 44-match win streak, U.S. women knelt for racial justice, sued their ownership for equal pay and sexist discrimination and actively protest their owners in the field. They won the 2019 World Cup in the midst of it all.

It should be clear to anyone who pays attention that progressive politics has nothing to do with loss. Nor did it negatively affect their popularity: They broke records for spectator and merchandise sales. They are not the opposite of the Patriots, which Trump claims. They are the very meaning of it.

Also, the teams that landed in the game of gold medals. The Canadian national team and gold medalists in Tokyo, are brave enough to support Quinn, their nonbinary partner who will be the first open athlete in Olympic history to win any medal. They, too, knelt down to support racial justice, and the team began using the hashtag #CANXNT, dropping the W to include Quinn. Players also wear transgender arm bands in scrimmage games.

Sweden, which is the favorite to win gold, has brought attention to pay for inequality for women footballers around the world. When we stop one day, we fill in the blanks with them [soccer] organizations and keep the fight going forward, Swedish watchdog Hedvig Lindahl told Reuters in 2019. I think it has to be some kind of a public pressure, that we won’t accept that way now. In the same year, the Swedish mens team removed the fee for the second half of its season in solidarity with the women’s team and protest their unequal treatment.

Women’s soccer is, and always has been, a place where players aren’t afraid to speak the truth in power. Trump may continue to try to discuss his base by attacking unreliable women, but the only thing he proves is how relevant he is. These women are changing the world, and the players next to them will no doubt carry the same torch.

Playing for the United States national soccer team in soccer has long gone beyond simple wins and losses. Due in part to their worldwide popularity and partly to a series of unaware decisions made by many generations of stars, U.S. women have led the world for decades, in the process becoming a symbol of empowerment and equality to millions.
