Centennial Celebrations Pay Tribute to Donald Ross’s Brilliance

Any conversation about the all-time best course designers will no doubt involve Donald Ross. Notable for his rich architecture and output during the Golden Age of Architecture, he has been credited with more than 400 layouts-original or redesigned.

By the 1920s, in his halcyon days, he had more work than he could handle, but quickly rolled out various masterpieces.

That, naturally, is not lost on the Donald Ross Society. Over the past two years, society has recognized Ross ’courses in the U.S. and Canada coming to anniversary sentences. Unfortunately, the pandemic delayed the fun for some.

“We’re running into an era where Ross was at the peak of the 1920s and we also wanted to recognize that,” said Brad Becken, president of the Donald Ross Society.

That said, Becken and the team have identified 72 clubs that will celebrate a sentencing between 2020 and 2023. Or 37 between this year and 2022. “We keep our list based on when Ross worked on a course, and there are some courses like Schuylkill Country Club, which were originally laid by another architect and then modified by Ross,” Becken said.

Becken recently joined a panel discussion on the July 4 weekend at Teugega Country Club in Rome, NY, as part of a 100 year ceremony there.

The society, founded in 1989, honors each club with personalized inscriptions on an embossed plaque. Needless to say, the clubs are in full planning mode.

The Broadmoor Country Club of Indianapolis, designed in 1921, decided to have a hoopla the following year with the national Amateur State and various parties. PGA head Michael Admire said professionally that a hickory-shaft tournament could happen in the fall.
