Donald Trump Calls Former President of Afghanistan ‘Total Crook,’ Says ‘He’s Lost the Killing’

Former Republican President Donald Trump called former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani “a total crook,” adding, “He lost the murder.”

Trump made his comments in an interview Tuesday night with Fox News host Sean Hannity. Hannity asked Trump about his dealings with Taliban leaders and the Afghan government as Trump prepares to withdraw U.S. military troops from the region.

First, Trump said he negotiated with Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund, the founder of the Taliban. Trump said he told the Taliban leader that the withdrawal of U.S. troops was a “conditional agreement.” If the Taliban attacked any Americans or allies, Trump said, the U.S. would retaliate by bombing the leader’s homeland as well as other parts of the country.

“I like [the Taliban] to make an agreement with the Afghan government, “Trump continued.” Now, I didn’t have much confidence, frankly, in Ghani. I said that openly and clearly I thought he was a whole hook. “

Trump had previously said that “Ghani spent all his time wining and dining with our senators.” He added, “He has the senators in his pocket. That’s one of the problems we have. But I don’t like him … He got lost in murder in many, many different ways.”

Trump did not explain in what ways Ghani “lost the murder.”

Trump also said he suspected Ghani fled with cash when he secretly left Afghanistan on Sunday. Trump’s suspicion is based on Ghani’s “lifestyle,” “his homes” and “where he lives,” Trump said.

Trump’s claim about Ghani’s escape with the money may have come from the Russian embassy in Kabul. The embassy reported that Ghani and his entourage left with “four cars full of money,” Russian news agency RIA reported. The Russian government had previously offered “political support” to the country’s new Taliban leaders, the Taliban said.

Ghani is currently hiding in an unknown location. He fled his country as Taliban Islamic military forces reached the capital city of Kabul. Ghani later said he left to avoid further violence and bloodshed by those who could defend his rule.

However, Saad Mohseni, the owner of one of the most popular television stations in Afghanistan, told The New York Times that Ghani will be remembered as a traitor by his countrymen.

Ghani earned his doctorate from Columbia University in New York City. He then worked at the World Bank before returning to Kabul as a senior special adviser for the United Nations. From 2002 to 2004, he served as finance minister in Afghanistan and was introduced to fighting government corruption. He also published a 2008 book entitled Repairing Failed States: A Framework for Rebuilding a Broken World.

Despite Ghani’s vision for modernization in Afghanistan, he is also known for having a short temper and isolating himself from key allies across the country whose help he needs to govern, George said Packer on NPR. Packer profiled Ghani for The New Yorker Magazine in 2016.
