Donald Trump Jr. appears to agree. to the Taliban about at least one issue: that Facebook is engaging in censorship.
The militant group took power in Afghanistan after rebels stormed across the country and captured major cities within days. On Tuesday, Taliban members gave a press conference from the presidential palace in Kabul.
When asked about freedom of speech under Afghanistan’s new government, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid deflected the question, saying it should be given to Facebook instead.
“This question should be asked of people who claim to be advocates of freedom of speech who do not allow the publication of full information … I can ask the Facebook company,” he said, according to an interpreter. “This question should be asked of them.”
A clip of the press conference posted on Twitter went viral, gathering more than 3 million views. Trump Jr., the eldest son of former President Donald Trump, retweeted the clip, adding: “LOL … Not wrong either.”
The Taliban have long used social media to spread their message.
But Facebook confirmed this week that it will continue to ban Taliban content on its platforms, including Instagram and WhatsApp, because of the group’s classification as a terrorist organization.
“The Taliban are authorized as a terrorist organization under U.S. law and they are banned from our services under our Dangerous Organization policies,” a Facebook spokesperson told Newsweek.
“This means that we have deleted accounts maintained by or on behalf of the Taliban and prohibit their praise, support, and representation.”
A company spokesperson added that Facebook has “a dedicated team of regional experts who help to identify and alert us to emerging platform issues.”
The social media giant has not decided about whether it should recognize national governments, the spokesman said, but “respects the authority of the international community in making these decisions. Regardless of who holds the power, we will do what is appropriate. action against accounts and content that violates our policies. “
TikTok told CNBC that it has designated the Taliban as a terrorist organization and continues to remove content that praises, exalts or provides support to them.
Meanwhile, Twitter has come under fire for allowing Taliban members to post on the platform. Mujahid shared live updates of the Afghan group’s capture on his account.
Asked for comment about the Taliban’s use of the site, a company spokesperson told Newsweek that Twitter will “continue to promptly enforce our policies and review content that may violate Twitter’s Rules, specifically policies against in glorifying violence and platform manipulation and spam. ”
Former President Trump announced last month that he was suing the three largest tech companies in the country, claiming he and other conservatives had been falsely censored.
The former president has been banned from Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, owned by Google, since riots on Jan. 6, when his followers rushed to the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to prevent Congress from proving Joe Biden’s victory in elections.
Trump has been suspended from Facebook for at least two years after the company’s Oversight Board criticized the open nature of the initial penalty.
