Trump’s ‘Super-Duper’ Hypersonic Missiles Have No Panta: Russia Threatens Weapons

Western hypersonic missiles, including those referred to by former President Donald Trump as “super-duper”, do not threaten Russia and will be fired, state weapons maker Almaz-Antey said.

Last year, Trump announced that the U.S. was working on developing hypersonic missiles capable of flying at speeds 17 times the speed of sound.

“I called it a super-duper missile and I heard it the other night 17 times faster than they have now,” he said at a presentation that released the U.S. Space Force flag in May 2020.

“You took the fastest missile we have now, you heard Russia have five times and China worked five or six times, we have a 17 times.”

Almaz-Antey general designer Pavel Sozinov, however, has fallen short of any assumptions that faster means better.

“We can deal with any hypersonic missile, either existing or could be created in the near future”, Sozinov told Sputnik News. “‘Super missiles’ developed overseas do not pose a threat to us, and we know how to further develop in this field.”

In July, Russia’s Ministry of Defense announced the successful launch from Admiral Gorshkov’s Tsirkon hypersonic missile warship, which it said traveled at seven times the speed of sound and fired from the White Sea to reach the target more than 200 miles away on the Barents Sea.

The ministry also signed an agreement this week with a contractor to deliver the missiles to Russian troops by 2025.

“A government contract on the delivery of the 3M22 missile (the Tsirkon hypersonic missile) has been signed,” the defense ministry said in a statement shared with Russia’s state agency TASS on Tuesday.

“The contract was reached with the CEO of the Research and Production Association of Machine-Building Alexander Leonov at [Army-2021] international military-technical forum. “

Russia’s state agency reported that Putin had previously said the missile would remain on “alert alert”.

The multi-purpose missile, developed by rocket design bureau NPO Mashinostroyenia, is claimed to be designed to strike land and sea targets from more than 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) away and is capable of flying nine times in speed of sound.

Putin has also repeatedly mentioned it as part of a new generation of missile systems that he claims are more advanced than any foreign weapon.
