Some of the things like your own prejudices and preconceptions that there arent particularly enjoyable to encounter. Everyone likes to think prejudice is someone elses problem.
And then there’s the moral compass thing. Ethics does the right thing even when everyone is applauding the wrong.
My world before politics is smaller than my world after-politics. I admire honesty, grit and courage above all. My world is divided into people with character who were there in hard times and kinds of fair times that withered when it got hard.
It always seems that people with the highest natural need for comfort are never around when hay needs to be put in or there is something to be fixed at minus-20.
I can attest to discrimination all day. In fact, I have. The problem is, in politics you need help from people who don’t fit your imagined ideas of what good character means.

At some point, even hardheads start to get the message that there’s more than one type of grit. Challenging ideas, specifically your own, can be as taxing as big winds and deep cold.

But realization alone does not provide freedom from thoughtful thoughts, especially when those views are reinforced by the crowd with whom you are associating. It is always easier to believe that the people who share your famous point are right and the others are some combination of wrong lifestyle, weakness or evil.
In politics, thought starting ideas cover a wide range of people. Dipers are airheads who are never forced to base their lofty idea with a smidgen of reality. Liberals are like dead skunks and white lines stuck in the middle of the road. And the Conservatives are basically the Taliban who suits.

Those are easy narratives, and like all easy narratives, they are wrong. Oddly enough, some if not worldly people actually believe in them.
Political life can be a mirror that reflects your biases towards you. Some use that mirror to broaden their perspective, further close it. The descent is easier.
Liberal candidate Chrystia Freeland has clearly chosen the easy path. He was heading down with a vengeance.
Last week Freeland posted an edited video that apparently showed Conservative leader Erin OToole cursing public health care. Freeland expressed the shock at this attack on vulnerable Canadians in need of health care. Gosh, the Conservatives are really bad.
The problem is it’s all generated (an enlightened word for BS). OToole actually said he highly values the public health system and universal access will remain paramount.

Go to the figure. It may actually be possible that the man is also pro-life.
The point here is that Freeland has been around for a long time to figure out the difference between a fiber and a lie. He goes straight to the lie.
I’m pretty sure Freeland doesn’t see himself as lacking in morality as the self -proclaimed awake rarely does. But in this campaign, he became Donald Trump’s version of Canadas. Like Donald, Freeland saw truth and honesty as an unnecessary burden.
When the election is over, Freeland will have plenty of time to consider what the manipulation of a video says about him. That would not be a comfortable examination.
There aren’t many things less than manipulation, outright lying and panic. But that’s where Freeland is. Gosh, this awakening is hard.
