Paul Ryan, the former GOP Speaker of the House, broke away from his party’s Donald Trump loyalists by offering an unequivocal denial of the former president’s claim that the 2020 election was rigged.

“It wasn’t thrown away. It wasn’t stolen. Donald Trump lost the election. Joe Biden won the election. It’s very clear,” Mr. Ryan told WISN 12 News in a rare interview.

Mr. Ryan acknowledged that there were likely “organized shenanigans” in the elections, but said any incidents were not broad enough to skew the election in Mr. Biden’s favor.

“Is there fraud? Yes. Has it been fixed to the extent that it will change the Electoral College and the presidential election? Not really,” he said.

He also expressed sentiment similar to that of Congresswoman Liz Cheney, who has repeatedly said that the Republican Party should no longer look to Mr. Trump for its direction.

“I think it’s a big mistake for the Republican Party to be a party about a person or personality,” he said. “And I think we’re only going to remain losers if we wrap ourselves up in someone. It’s not going to go away this fast in a long time.”

When asked if he has immediate political aspirations such as running again as president in 2024 he said he has no plans to return and enjoy life as a private citizen. He currently teaches at Notre Dame and consults with think tanks.

“Who knows what the future holds down the road, but nothing in the near future, that’s for sure,” Mr. Ryan said.

Mr. Ryan is known for his love of policies that cut taxes for the wealthy and for corporations and was instrumental in the passage of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which saw a massive transfer of wealth to the rich and the corporations while adding $ 1.5 trillion to the national deficit.

The former speaker in the House was also an ardent advocate of destroying social safety nets. He passed measures that would give states more freedom in how they manage food stamp benefits allowing them to make receiving benefits more difficult or restrictive and also proposed changing Medicare through of offering vouchers for expensive private insurance rather than providing guaranteed care for those in the program, mainly the elderly.
