Charger’s crowded end room was highlighted by veteran Jared Cook, but Donald Parham will be an important piece this season as well.
Signed last year, the 6-foot-8 Parham took advantage of his limited chances, recording 10 getting 159 yards (15.9 yards per reception) and three touchdowns on 20 targets in 2020.
Primarily used as a receiver in 2020, Parham has taken steps to become a complete player in the position – showing more toughness and blocking ability throughout the training camp and preseason.
“I’m very optimistic about him as a receiver based on little I’ve seen in the film and I think he has risen and shown that he can do that more consistently. I’m impressed with his willingness and blocking in the aggressiveness that is essential for a tight end, ”Joe Lombardi said.
With Lombardis offense heavily focused on matchups where a variety of staff packages will be shown, Parham must be a mismatch to threaten seams and in the red zone.
The last time Lombardi called plays for the Lions, QB Matthew Stafford targeted the tight end with nearly 25% of his passes. In addition, Saints Drew Brees relied heavily on his tight end.
It just shows how much Parham should be involved in the passing game, but the knowledge that he possesses upward ability as a blocker is more beneficial to the offense.
