Van Drew must explain votes against women in Congress | Letters

What makes women tolerant of politicians like US Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-2nd Dist.? Close to 52% of the people he represents are women. However, his voting record ignores the needs and rights of about 52%.

There are many individual issues to mention, but her clearest anti-woman no vote last year was that she threw against an extension of time for states to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution. A year ago, Van Drew wrote the proposal.

Van Drew never explained why he voted against giving women and men equal rights through the ERA.

What is happening to him? Why wouldn’t he want the women of his district, the state and the country, to have equal rights that are no more rights than men?

I hope everyone, but especially the women, will ask Van Drew these simple questions. If he answers them, it will be for the first time.

Women fight in many battles. The one they should not fight for is the fundamental right to equality. It was time for Van Drew to explain himself.

Play morality is different

I believe most people are political hypocrites. If your party’s only single campaign during a general election is more moral, you don’t have many campaigns.

Democrats like me had a right to be angry with Donald Trump in 2016 when the Access Hollywood tapes came out, we loved Bill Clinton and Ted Kennedy. That same year, Hillary Clinton campaigned as the good candidate in two shoes in the presidential election, and she lost.

On the other hand, in 1998, Republicans chose Mrs. Clintons as husband, Bill, for lying about a relationship with a presidential intern. However, Bill Clinton left office in 2001 with higher approval ratings. Eighteen years after the impeachment, Republicans will elect and vote for Donald Trump, who has faced dozens of accusations of sexual abuse or assault.

Voter policy wins. Moral resentment is not. One could argue a candidate’s personal life reflects their policy, but there is a fine line between public policy positions and private life. It’s been like this for a long time and will likely stay that way.
