Capitol Police recommended Jan. 6 officers for discipline in six cases

WASHINGTON (AP)-U.S. Capitol Police said Saturday it is recommending disciplinary action in six cases after an internal review of the officer’s behavior stemming from the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The Office of Professional Responsibility department opened 38 internal investigations and identified 26 of the officers involved, police said in a statement. It said in 20 of the cases, no errors were found.

However, police said the violations were maintained and recommended disciplinary action for six of the cases including three for misconduct, one for failure to follow instructions, one for incorrect statement. and one for incorrect dissemination of information.

It is not clear in the statement whether a case is an individual officer or whether an officer may be mentioned in more than one case. The names of the officers involved and details about the conduct or actions that led to the suspected violations were not made public.

The statement also said the U.S. attorneys’ office did not find sufficient evidence that any of the officers had committed a crime.

More than 600 people faced charges in the Jan. 6 attack, in which a mob of former President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol, fought with police and tried to stop certification of election victory for President Joe Biden.

The statement said internal review in another case is pending with an officer accused of unsatisfactory performance and unworthy conduct. It said the internal investigation began after a criminal investigation, and no charges were filed.

Five people were killed in the attack on the Capitol and its aftermath, including Trump supporter Ashli ​​Babbitt, who was shot and killed by police. A police officer who fought with the mob eventually died, and several officers later committed suicide.

This week, the USCP provided the information to the Department of Justice as part of its ongoing prosecution of those involved in the Jan. 6 attack.

Police opened an internal investigation in February, and announced at the time that it had suspended six paid officers. Whether they are among those recommended for discipline is not clear in the statement.

The department said the six cases should not diminish the heroism of the Capitol Police effort on Jan. 6.
