Former President Donald Trump on Monday tore up former President George W. Bush in his speech marking the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, saying Mr. Bush should not “give a lecture” to Americans about terrorists on the right.
[H]We are talking that terrorists on the ‘right’ are a bigger problem than those from foreign countries who hate America and are pouring into our country today, ”Mr. Trump said of Mr. Bush in a statement. “Then why is he willing to spend a trillion dollars and be responsible for the deaths of perhaps millions of people? He shouldn’t be educating us about anything.”
Mr. Bush spoke Saturday in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where United Flight 93 crashed on a horrific day two decades ago. He called on Americans to confront domestic extremists, comparing them to terrorists abroad.
Although Mr. Bush did not directly call on the mobs who violated the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 to stop Congress from validating the 2020 election for President Biden, he clearly refers to them.
There is little culture that overlaps between violent extremists abroad and violent extremists at home, ”Mr. Bush said.“ But in their contempt for pluralism, in their disregard for human life, in their determination to desecrate national symbols, they are children of the same evil spirit. And it is our continuing duty to face them. “
The speech was praised by media pundits, but Mr. Trump clarified that he was not a fan. He said the rhetoric spread in disguise because Mr. Bush started conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq to bring out the foreign terrorists responsible for the 9/11 attacks.
Mr. Trump said Mr. Bush led a failed and unmotivating presidency.
He should not educate anyone, he said.
This is the second time in three days that Mr. Trump has used the anniversary of September 11, 2001, as an attack to criticize political rivals. On Saturday, he issued a blank statement condemning Mr. Bidens ’departure from Afghanistan.
