The state guard nominee dropped after Facebook posted about Trump

A nominee for a state watchdog post called as a nationally recognized ethics expert withdrew his nomination on Thursday after political posts surfaced on social media including one in which he wondered if COVID-19 could be God’s punishment [Donald Trumps] elections and reign?

Dennis Rendleman, who is the nominee for the executive inspector general position in the Democratic Treasurer Michael Frerichs Office, has asked to withdraw his nomination.

A spokesman for the treasurers ‘office confirmed the Rendlemans’ withdrawal in a statement that read more like a vote of confidence in the nominee, who appears to be serving the position on a temporary basis.

Rendleman did not return a message from the Chicago Sun-Times asking for an explanation of his decision. The Frerichs website still listed him as the executive inspector general of the offices late Thursday night.

Center Square, an online media outlet dedicated to state and local government, first reported on Rendlemans ’exit from the position, attributing it to Republicans who are aware of his social media posts.

In a Facebook post from last July, Rendleman wrote in part wondering if Covid could be God’s punishment for the election of 45 and reign? referring to the former president.

Many of the Rendlemans posts on Facebook are about Trump. A scan of his page shows the former inspector general nominee who posted negative opinion stories and political cartoons about the former Republican president. The other post is about the pandemic and the importance of masking.

State Senator Steve McClure, R-Springfield, initially supported the Rendlemans ’appointment but then asked a Senate committee to block it by a vote on it after learning of the social media posts, The Center reported Square.

We’ve seen bad language, we’ve seen posts accusing Republicans of killing people, essentially, McClure said in audio posted on The Center Square website.

We have seen posts that are just more on top of extremist language, which is completely inappropriate for someone who wants to continue to serve, by the way, he serves in this capacity while making these posts, but someone who should be an inspector general, kind of more than excited, fair, impartial that’s not what we see in these posts.

They are in the ugliest kind of political discussions on his Facebook page, and we all believe it is inappropriate. And some of them are just ridiculous.

McClure did not respond to requests for comment from the Sun-Times.
