Column: Gen. deserves praise. Mark Milley in the face of Deranged Trump Syndrome

MAGA followers are talking about the Trump Derangement Syndrome dismissing former critics of the president that most Americans are simply out of mind.

What we really struggled with was the Deranged Trump Syndrome the sense that Donald Trump was and is capable of almost any persuasive gesture.

Few will have more reason to grieve than the nation’s highest military official, given his many encounters with the cracked commander in chief. DTS clearly urged Gen. Mark A. Milley, the four-star Army general who is chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to contact China’s military counterpart, Gen Li Zuocheng, twice once before election day and again two days after the defeat Trump driven his MAGA army into insurrection January 6 to ensure the strength of the rival that the United States had no plot.

We need more information about Milleys ’thinking, and he is sure he will be asked to provide it when he testified later this month before senators about the wrongful departure from Afghanistan. But based on what was leaked from a book by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa of the Washington Post, to be released next week, Milley deserves praise.

Set aside for a moment that, as has often been said, Trump has placed the country in uncharted territory given his inclination, even, in issuing standards, the Constitution and the rule of law.

For years, under the presidents of both parties, national security officials kept lines of communication with their counterparts in the Soviet Union, now Russia, and China to avoid miscalculations. which could provoke war. Milley continued that tradition. As his spokesman said, Milleys’ call to Chinese and other foreign counterparts was in line with his responsibility to maintain strategic stability, and liaised with other Pentagon officials.

If Milley really has reason to fear what Trump can do to keep his grip on the power stage of a coup, order an attack, even a nuclear strike then we should celebrate that Milley acted. This is the same man who, in the summer of 2020, clad in grueling battles, accompanied the evolving Trump through Lafayette Park, opposite the White House, after it was violently cleaned up by peaceful protesters for justice in race, to make Trumps gets the Bible, picks a picture at a nearby historic church.

We already know how desperately Milley was about a coup on Trump’s last day from another recent book by Washington Post reporters Carol D. Leonnig and Philip Rucker. It was a Reichstag moment, Milley allegedly warned his subjects. They can try, but they will not succeed.

The book Woodward and Costa reveals more about a previously reported conversation between Milley and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) on Jan. 8 the same day he called Li in which he got angry about Trump igniting a nuclear attack. When he called Trump crazy, the book is relevant, Milley replied, I agree with you on everything.

Overall, tell us more. For all the books documenting how crazy Trump is as president, its time to hear it directly from Milley, etc., so that the country knows what better guardrails can be built against the crazy leader.

Many supported Milley, but more strongly became detractors who said he violated the principle of establishing civilian control over the military. It was questionable, disturbing though, in assuring Li, the Chinese general, that the United States had not yet attacked, Milley said he would call early if it was. Yet he did not betray, as some charge.

Not all of those who attacked the Milleys were Republicans, citing the conversation about Trump’s infidelity. But there are many. If those Republicans have shown the same resentment at the former president at first in history who refused to comply with the peaceful transfer of power and who are still firing at his supporters to weaken democracy itself then they may deserve take it seriously now.
