The covid Ronapreve treatment given to Donald Trump to launch on the NHS

Treatment for Covid, given to former president Donald Trump when he caught the virus, will be given to frail NHS patients at the hospital.

Ronapreve became the first treatment specifically designed for Covid to receive regulatory approval in the UK last month.

It consists of the two active ingredients casirivimab and imdevimab, both proteins known as monoclonal antibodies, that attach to the surface of the coronavirus.

Spike proteins act on the lining of the respiratory system where they tightly bind to the virus, and prevent access to cells.

The Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) said Ronapreve has the potential to benefit thousands of patients, with its launch initially targeted at those who have not developed an antibody response to Covid.

Enough of the drug has been sold to treat eligible patients across the country from next week.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said: “We have secured a new set of treatment for our most vulnerable patients in hospitals across the UK and I am excited that it is saving lives from early yet next week.

“The UK has led the world in the identification and release of life-saving drugs, specifically for Covid-19, and we will continue our important work to find the best treatments available to save lives and protect the NHS.”

The Medicines and Products Healthcare Regulations Agency (MHRA) in August said clinical data showed that Ronapreve could be used to prevent infection, treat symptoms of serious infections, and reduce the likelihood of be admitted to the hospital.

The trials took place before the widespread launch of the vaccine, the emergence of virus variations.

The drug – which is already approved for emergency use in more than 20 countries – can be given as an infusion or injection every four weeks by a doctor or nurse.

Mr. Trump was administered by Ronapreve in October 2020 during the experimental phase, and hailed it as a drug for Covid. There is no cure for Covid.
