Granderson: Mixing football with Trump’s big lie is Herschel Walker’s game plan

Football great Herschel Walker is running for the United States Senate in Georgia.

I know because his campaign has sent out a steady stream of emails full of football puns since he announced his candidacy in late August.

I can’t help but chuckle whenever I see things like Will you be one of my first recruits? and Theres who was too much at stake to sit on the side. Even his campaign logo is loosely shaped like a football as if Walker saw sticking to the sport as a bold political strategy and not an attempt to stop progressive Black athletes from talking about something that many conservative white people don’t want to hear.

Yet as funny as it is to see the winner of the Heisman trophy leaning on Dad’s jokes for fundraising, the fact is a poll this week showed more than 75% of states that GOP voters want Walker in the rest of the Republican field.

Pun meant.

Maybe football references are enough. Or maybe it has nothing to do with football and all about his close 40-year friendship with Donald Trump, who endorsed him. Nearly 63% of Republicans still want the twice-impeachable former president to lead the party. Lead them where it is not clear.

Saturday’s Justice for J6 rally in Washington turned into another failed attempt to re -pay violent rebels as innocent victims. But the reason for the attack itself on January 6 has not lost any of its political potential. That’s why the Walkers ’relentless support for Trump, more than his past football glory, is his best game.

Pun intended again.

This week, Rep. Announced. Anthony Gonzalez (R-Ohio) that he will not be asked for reelection in 2022. He will not support Trump and his big lie that the election was stolen. Gonzalez, also a former NFL player, who faced threats to his family and major challenges, decided to get out of the game.

(Walkers are right, this pun thing is addictive).

Gonzalez was one of 10 House Republicans who voted to be impeach after the Capitol attack.

I don’t believe he can be president again, said Gonzalez, a former Ohio State of Buckeye, who added, most of my political energy will be spent working on the exact goal.

(Not sure if Gonzalez defined the objective thing as a pun, but his rebuke of Trumpism is pretty clear.)

It is also clear that with every Republican lawmaker who has resigned or been given censorship for standing against Trumpism, the Republican Party is more aligned with the January 6 attack on both the capital and our democracy.

Despite all the shameless emails leaking corny sports references, Walker, who hasn’t lived in Georgia for decades and has a turbulent past that included accusations of pointing a gun at his ex -wife’s head, is leading the Republicans because he supported Trump.

Not because he played football. After all football hasn’t saved Gonzalez, who will retire already because he doesn’t want to face Max Miller, a major Trump-backed supporter who served as a senior advisor to his White House. And even if Gonzalez were able to hold his seat, he would be a weirdo in his own party, so what’s the point?

It’s no loss for Ohio or our Country, Trump said of Gonzalezs ’exit.

I want that to be true. As a Michigan Wolverine fan, I’m not rooting for any Ohio State. But I was disappointed to see Gonzalez leave under these circumstances because few things are bigger than football.
