Time to reset the clock: after dozens of empty threats, Donald Trump has made a promise to sue one journalist or, in this case, three: the trio of Pulitzer Prize-winning reporters New York Times revealed, in 2018, decades of tax evasion and even instances of outright fraud perpetrated by the then president.
Trump’s lawyer at the time, Charles Harder of Gawker murder fame, declared the allegation of fraud and tax evasion was 100 percent false, and highly defamatory, before threatening legal action. (By publishing the 18-month investigation, Harder said, the Times will expose itself to substantial responsibility and damages for the defamation.)

The long-promised trial has finally been carried out, but not for libel or libel it appears, in fact, that Trump has completely abandoned the pretense that any part of the Times investigation is untrue. Instead, in a complaint filed Tuesday in New Yorks Dutchess County and first reported by the Daily Beast, lawyers for the former president claimed that Times reporters forced his niece into a clandestine plot to rewrite history of the President of the United States.
Here’s how Trump’s lawyers described how they believe the events took place:
[Times investigative reporter Susan] Craig, who had no previous contact with Mary Trump, showed up at his house and attempted to talk to her about a very important story about [the Trump] family finances. At first Mary Trump refused to talk to Craig, even if I could tell her [i]t is not cool you are showing up at my house and further emphasis, I will not talk.
Despite his denials, Craig continued and relentlessly sought out Mary Trump in his pursuit of certain documents he believed Mary Trumps possessed. In particular, Craig was looking for confidential documents that Craig indicated to Mary Trump that he believed these documents could help rewrite the history of the President of the United States.
The story continues
Later, Trumps lawyers claimed, his niece agreed to help, and at that time Craig instructed Mary Trump to smuggle documents from his lawyers ’office, while using a burner. phones in an attempt to hide their communications. If it cared for the revolt she received from Craig, Trumps lawyers said, Mary Trump never turned over tens of thousands of pages of her tax records to uncles.
The rest of the story is well known: the Times went on to publish a full 18 -month investigation based on tax records that, the suit note with apparent pride, gained more insight than any previous article on history of The Times, and coincided with a 7.4% lump in the Times stock price. (The lawsuit does not mention the Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting won by three reporters for the series.)
Reached for comment by the Daily Beast, Mary Trump did not seem phased out or amused by the suit from her uncle. I think he’s a loser, and he’ll throw anything at the wall he can, he said. Its desperation. The walls are closing and he is throwing anything at the wall that sticks. As always happens with Donald, hell try to change the subject.
The former president is seeking damages from both Mary Trump and Times of an amount to be determined at trial, but believed to be at least One Hundred Million Dollars.
