Former President Donald Trump has sued his niece Mary Trump, The New York Times, and three of its reporters about the scope of his tax records, the Daily Beast reported.
Trump filed the lawsuit Tuesday in Dutchess County, New York, claiming his nephew and the Times had a “fraudulent plot” of how to get his records for reporting on his tax history.
The Times reporter named in the suit were David Barstow, Susanne Craig, and Russ Buettner, who won a Pulitzer Prize in 2019 for their 18 -month investigation into Trump’s finances.
The damages claimed from the Times and Mary Trump will be determined at trial but are “believed to be at least One Hundred Million Dollars,” the Daily Beast reported.
Trump refused to release his tax return and took legal action to block their release. In a court filing last month, his lawyers asked a federal judge to block Congress from getting his tax returns.
The Daily Beast reported that the lawsuit told the Times that Mary Trump was convinced to “smuggle the notes from her lawyer’s office and give them to The Times.”
The Trump Organization is also the center of a tax fraud investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office.
Trump was personally named in a lawsuit released July 1 that said Trump wrote reviews for family members of Allen Weisselberg, the organization’s CFO. Weisselberg also faces charges for tax crimes.
Mary Trump, who became a vocal critic of her uncle, recently told Insider Joshua Zitser that Trump was a “fascist.” In August, he released a book about his uncle entitled, “The Reckoning: Our Nation’s Trauma and Finding a Way to Heal.”
