Former President Donald Trump has filed a $ 100 million lawsuit against his niece from the Rockville Center for publishing a vile book and providing major family tax records to The New York Times.
Trump named Mary Trump and The Times, who used the records as the basis for a Pulitzer Prize-winning expos detailing an alleged tax scheme carried out by the former president and the late father Fred Trump Sr., as defendants in the lawsuit. He is represented by New Jersey -based attorney Alina Habba.
“I think he’s a loser, and he’ll throw anything at the wall he can,” Mary Trump told The Daily Beast, which first reported the lawsuit. “It’s desperate.”
The 55-year-old psychologist is accusing the former president, his sister Maryanne Trump Barry, and his late sister Roberts estate of allegedly cheating him on a multi-million dollar inheritance.
The origins of the cases were in 1981 after the death of Marys father, Fred Trump Jr., Donald Trump’s older brother, who left 16-year-old Mary with a lucrative real estate portfolio. Mary Trump said her aunt and uncle were supposed to take care of her interests but instead saved money, and finally squeezed her out of the family fortune in a 2001 settlement related to Fred’s estate. Trump Sr., who died in 1999.
He sued Donald in September 2020, just under two years after he claimed to know what they did through The Times ’investigation into Trumps finances. In Mary Trumps best -selling told of all and Too Not Enough: How My Family Created the Worlds Most Dangerous People, she announced that she gave the family tax records to Times reporters.
The Times used the documents to expose the former president’s role in a suspected fraudulent tax scheme, which involves multiple Sun assets. Among the revelations was the Trump family building a shell corporation called All County Building Supply & Maintenance, with an address in Manhasset, that was allegedly used to launder money to avoid taxes.
“Donald Trump’s Tax Time coverage has helped inform citizens through thorough reporting on a topic of excessive public interest,” The Times said in a statement in response. “This lawsuit is an attempt to silence independent news organizations and we intend to vigorously defend against it.”
