An anti -Trump candidate said Monday he would drop his bid for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania.

Craig Snyder, a longtime lobbyist and political consultant from Philadelphia, said he hasn’t been able to generate enough support.

The seat opens with the 2023 retirement of the two-time Republican U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey. The Pennsylvanias Republican and Democratic primaries are tight for what is expected to be one of the nations most competitive contests for Senate elections in the coming years.

Snyder saw the GOP’s large field as a major ally.

He thought he could target what he believes is 40% of Republican voters who see themselves as more loyal to the party and conservatism, while five or more major candidates will separate voters loyal to former President Donald Trump. .

Running Republicans include conservative commentator Kathy Barnette; real estate investor Jeff Bartos, the partys 2018 nominee for lieutenant governor; Sean Parnell, a decorated former Army Ranger and author who wrote a memoir to the New York Times best-selling of his service in Afghanistan; and Carla Sands, the wealthy former ambassador to Denmark under Trump.

Parnell endorsed by Trump and Barnette both ran in the U.S. House unsuccessfully last year. The GOP’s main field includes many other unknown relatives.
