Donald Reagan of Virginia was identified as the man who drowned in Marthas Vineyard

Authorities identified Donald Reagan, 64, of Fairfax, Virginia, as the man who drowned in West Tisbury at Marthas Vineyard.

Reagan drowned Monday while in the water with his friend, a 68-year-old Marthas Vineyard man. The man, whose name was not released, was taken to the hospital with injuries not considered life -threatening, according to a statement from Massachusetts State Police.

On Monday afternoon, Reagan and his friend launched their kayaks at Tisbury Great Pond. After paddling awhile, they enter the kayaks and their personal floatation devices on the beach at the area known as The Cut, a large opening in the beach sand that separates Tisbury Great Pond from the Atlantic Ocean at Quansoo Beach, an area that known for high waves and rip waves, the statement said.

Then the men swam into the sea and a strong east current pulled them away from shore, state police said.

The men struggled to free themselves from the current and the friend tirelessly attempted to touch and help Reagan when the latter began to struggle. Unfortunately the strength of the currently separated men and friends repeated attempts to reach Reagan again were unsuccessful, the statement said.

West Tisbury Police and Tri-Town Fire Rescue and EMS were dispatched to Quansoo Beach around 4 p.m. for a report of two swimmers caught in the flood, officials said. Reagans’ friend eventually swam ashore and called 911.

The U.S. Coast Guard recovered Reagan shortly before 5 p.m. and took him to shore, where first responders performed CPR. A Coast Guard helicopter took Reagan from the beach to Marthas Vineyard Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead around 6 p.m., state police said.
