Check the facts: Did the Marine that Trump brought to the stage at the rally actually lifted a baby off a wall at the airport in Kabul?

“We were also honored to join one of the Marines who bravely served in Kabul during the retreat,” Trump said, “and helped evacuate the children to … the walls of the airport. You saw him. Great work. what he did. ”

Clark told the audience Saturday: “I’m the guy who pulled the baby against the wall and it’s definitely one of the greatest things I’ve done in my entire life.” Clark then thanked the audience for their support before leaving the stage.

The problem, the Marine Corps said was not Clark in the video.

Fact First: In a statement Wednesday, a U.S. Marine Corps spokesman said Clark was not the individual who lifted the child off a wall in the viral image and Clark is now being investigated for his appearance at the rally.

“Regarding the viral image that began to spread around August 20, 2021, the Marine who identified with that particular image was not LCpl Clark,” Kelton Cochran, a spokesman for the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit said in a statement.

Cochran added, “The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) has initiated an investigation into the mandate regarding LCpl Hunter Clark’s attendance at the event last week to determine if any DoD policies were violated.”

The Department of Defense generally prohibits active duty members from speaking at political gatherings.

Cochran said in his statement that “details relating to this incident will not be released while the investigation is being conducted.”

It is unclear if there are other instances of U.S. troops lifting babies on the wall at Kabul airport. The chaotic scene there lasted for several days as U.S. troops helped the Afghans to retreat.

CNN did not directly contact Clark.

Asked by phone Thursday night if her son stood up to her comments at Saturday’s rally, Clark’s mother Peggy Clark told CNN, “She won’t comment about that.”

“He asked me not to provide any information right now,” he said. “He can’t do any interviews or talk to anyone right now. I’m sorry.”

“He has to go through some things and when he gets the chance and can do that then I’m sure he’ll make a statement.”
