David Schoen, lawyer who defended Trump during impeachment, to oversee ZOA

WASHINGTON (JTA) The Zionist Organization of America has elected as its national chairman David Schoen, the Jewish lawyer whose Orthodox observance garnered media attention as he defended former President Donald Trump at Trumps second impeachment trial.

Schoen, a constitutional lawyer living in Atlanta, has served for many years on the ZOA board and represented the organization, at a time leading to ZOA’s efforts to legally hold the Palestine Liberation Organization accountable for misconduct. terrorist attack in its name.

He became famous in the country when he represented Trump after the House of Representatives impeach the former president for advancing the Jan. 6 uprising in the capital. The Senate acquitted Trump.

Schoen covered his head with his hand several times before drinking water while speaking during the Trumps Senate hearing, leading observers to guess he was saying a blessing. He was also absent from the trial when Shabbat clouded over.

Schoen, who usually wears a kippah, said he doesn’t wear it while speaking during the trial because he thinks it looks awkward.

Trump is not Schoens ’first high -profile case. He was set to represent Jeffrey Epstein on sex trafficking charges when the financier was found dead, apparently by suicide, in prison.

The ZOA election is Sunday. Membership re -elected longtime president Morton Klein. Klein is the professional leader of the organization and Schoen is its leader.
