Former President Donald Trump has endorsed Geoff Diehl, a longtime Republican candidate in the 2022 race for governor of Massachusetts.
In a statement Tuesday night, Trump said Diehl will be an outstanding Governor for the state of Massachusetts, and it is my honor to give him my Complete and Total Endorsement!
A former state legislator who is one of the most conservative representatives on Beacon Hill, Diehl was the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate in 2018. He lost that race to Senator Elizabeth Warren by 24 percentage points. He did not immediately return a request for comment on the endorsement.
In his endorsement, Trump denounced Republican Governor Charlie Baker as a RINO Republican in the name only of doing nothing for the Republican Party.
He went on a litany of attacks, criticizing Baker for everything from his stance on crime and his response to COVID-19 to climate transportation and issues.
Baker is certainly not an American First or Make America Great Again kind of person, Trump wrote. Geoff Diehl, on the other hand, is a true patriot.
A popular second-generation moderator who has avoided national political controversy and emphasized his collaborative, bipartisan approach, Baker has yet to say whether hell is looking for re-election in 2022. Sometimes a vocal critic of Trump , Baker said he would not vote for president in 2020.
Trump attacked Baker on Twitter in September 2020 after Baker defended the use of ball-in ballots.
RINO CEO Charlie Baker of Massachusetts has been unsuccessfully trying to defend Mail In Ballots, Trump tweeted, repeatedly without evidence saying mail-in voting leads to widespread fraud.
Diehl faces an uphill battle to earn the Republican nomination in the race, let alone win the general election in blue Massachusetts. If Baker is not running, Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito is widely seen as a likely GOP nominee.
Diehl recently participated in a protest outside a Baker fundraiser held on Cape Cod.
Three major Democratic candidates also launched campaigns: state Senator Sonia Chang-Daz, former state senator Ben Downing, and Harvard professor Danielle Allen.
Without name recognition to Baker, or to another potential candidate, Massachusetts Attorney Maura Healey, a Democrat whose $ 3.3 million campaign account and national reputation would make a heavy contender. Healey has not yet announced his plans.
Although he has yet to say if he is running, Governor Charlie Baker raised more than $ 173,300 in September, marking his best month of campaign fundraising in two years. A campaign spokesman did not immediately return a request for comment on Trump’s endorsement.
