Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday justified the Jan. 6 mob attack on the U.S. Capitol, calling it a legitimate protest against an eccentric election.
In a statement, Trump targeted the bipartisan select committee investigating the attack, which involved a horde of his supporters who stormed the Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Dozens of policemen were injured in the riot, and many people were killed.
The committee should end after spending millions of dollars, whose real uprising happened on Nov. 3, the Presidential election, not on Jan. 6 which was a day of protesting the Fake Election results, Trump said in his statement.
Jan. 6 began with a rally near the White House and ended with a violent mob inside the Capitol, fighting with police and storming the building.
A bipartisan House majority voted to impeach Trump for inciting the uprising shortly after the attack. A bipartisan Senate majority voted to condemn, but the vote fell across the two-thirds required for judgment.
Republicans then underestimated the importance of the riot, including opposition to a commission investigator and disrespectful remorse to Democrats for the Capitols ’vulnerability to the attack.
But the select committee, which has two Republican members and seven Democrats, continues to gather evidence, make deposits and issue subpoenas. Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), Its chairman, said the committee will make criminal referrals to Trump allies who oppose subpoenas.
Trump continued to lie about the 2020 election, which lost him a wide margin, and made many excuses for the Capitol attack, but Wednesday’s comment was one of his most brazen yet.
