Donald Lee Glass Jr. (Don)

January 7, 1967 – September 30, 2021

During his 54 years, Donald Glass has traveled extensively, created stunning works of art, left his indelible mark in the field of art education, loved and cherished and helped raise two kind, wonderful- amazing kids. He died on September 30, 2021, surrounded by his family and friends. Don was born to Donald Glass Sr. and Jane Lindig on January 7, 1967. She grew up in Lewisburg with her “Wonder Twin” sister Donna. Born four minutes before Donna, she remembers him as the best brother she had ever expected. After graduating from Lewisburg Area High School in 1985, he attended the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and then earned his Masters in Education at Temple University. It was in Philadelphia that he met the love of his life, Sangeetha Madhavan. As they have done throughout their lives together, Don and Sangeetha have made Philadelphia their home, creating a strong community of fellow academics and friends who are welcomed to gourmet dinners and epic, evening discussions. After they married, the young couple moved to Providence and then to Johannesburg, South Africa, another city that was turned into an orphanage. In Johannesburg, Don completed his Ph.D. in Education from the University of the Witwatersrand and the couple accepted their son Kiran. Hurricane Katrina cut a bit in New Orleans, and Don and his family moved to Silver Spring, Maryland in 2006. He combined his commitment to the arts with a passion for rigorous research, working to develop programs to expand access to quality arts education, especially for those with special needs. A one -year fellowship at Harvard University was followed by work at VSA and the Kennedy Center focused on art education and analysis. In 2008, their daughter Amartya was born. The young family did not slow down on its adventure: They went to Estonia and Iceland, the Skeleton Coast of Namibia and the rainforests of Madagascar. Back home, there are dance recitals and soccer games, and dinner parties with friends, be it neighbors or guests stopping by from all over the world. Don loves live music shows, rides his bike all over the Washington area and learns about new technologies. He believes in making real connections with people, always taking the time to stop and have a conversation, not in a hurry, not even permanently. It’s important to her to spend quality time with the people she cares about and do the things that matter. He has a deceptive sense of humor and a wealth of stories to tell. Her kindness was demonstrated in the ways she extended to her children, as well as her nieces and nephews. Sangeetha, Kiran and Amartya and all of us who know her will bring us a bit of this kind, gentle and smiling person for life. In exchange for flowers, the family requested donations to the Southern Poverty Law Center, a group she has supported throughout her life. A celebration of life will be held on another day.
