Trump Escalates Attack on McConnell As He Tries for Presidential Money in Iowa

Former President Donald Trump has escalated an ongoing feud with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who has been cycled through his baseless allegations of election fraud, ousted President Joe Biden on immigration and formally endorsed Senator Chuck Grassley, as he tested presidential waters in Iowa on Saturday night.

“Mitch McConnell had to challenge that election because even then, we had a lot of material being challenged in that election. He had to challenge that election. [Senate Majority Leader Chuck] Schumer likes. McConnell has no courage, ”Trump told his supporters at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines.

Holding a rally in the nominee’s early presidency of the state years earlier in 2024 is about establishing a relationship with voters and laying the groundwork for a potential campaign. This is his first visit back to the state after defeating Biden in November.

For nearly two hours, Trump has not disrupted his usual rhetoric, ranging from issues from the border wall to Afghanistan to infrastructure to voter fraud with his personal outrages, prompting chants that “ Trump won ”and“ we love you ”from the crowd.

“Republicans must stay strong. You have to fight, take back our country,” he said, calling the Democrat -led infrastructure and spending measures as a “socialist change bill, a bill that is open that border, and a bill to destroy America’s energy. ”

Calling on supporters to come out for the 2022 midterms, Trump said, “We must send a radically outstanding message that they will never forget.”

He went on to falsely call 2020 a “stolen” election, accusing Biden of fraud and the establishment of orchestrating a conspiracy to oust him from office. Trump and his allies did not present any real evidence for his widespread voter fraud claims, but Iowans asked Grassley about it in town halls.

Trump endorsed Grassley after the Republican Iowa senator spoke with Governor Kim Reynolds who preceded him. “I am pleased to announce tonight that Senator Chuck Grassley has my complete and total endorsement for re-election,” he said. “Look at this, he’s still young!”

Trump is also teasing a potential new slogan for 2024, which stops the official announcement of a bid for re -election. “It would be to be Keep America Great but America’s not great now. So we are using the same slogan Make America Great Again and we may even add to it,” he said. “Make America Great Again, Again.”

Trump is more popular in the state today than when he held the position. According to the latest Des Moines Register / Medicom poll, nearly 53 percent of Iowan voters have a favorable view and 45 percent have an unfavorable view of the former Republican president.

He ended the rally with a campaign-style promise: “Together we will strengthen America. We will make America rich again. We will make America strong again. We will make America proud again. We will make America safe again. And we will play America again. “
