Joe Biden helped Terry McAuliffe paint Youngkin as ‘Donald Trump’s acolyte’

ARLINGTON, Va. -President Joe Biden relied on Terry McAuliffe’s main campaign strategy to tie Republican Glenn Youngkin to former President Trump and nationalize Virginia’s toss-up gubernatorial race.

“I ran against Donald Trump. Terry was running against an acolyte of Donald Trump,” Biden told a crowd of about 2,500 brave people on a cold, windy night in Arlington.

Soon, McAuliffe warned that Biden’s “unpopularity” meant Democrats would have to work harder through “headwinds from Washington,” and Biden’s approval ratings were increasingly dropped since then.

But in recent gubernatorial race polls showing intense heat between the former Democratic governor, who is seeking a second non-consecutive term, and Republican Glenn Youngkin, a former private equity firm co-CEO, turned McAuliffe to Biden to give him help a week before Election Day.

“Talk about an oxymoron: Donald Trump and electoral integrity,” Biden said, apparently referring to Youngkin’s electoral integrity platform that he pushed during the Republican primary. “I can’t believe he put the words Trump and integrity in the same sentence.”

Much of his speech was not about Youngkin but a response to Trump and a defense of his performance as president.

“Trump wants to be proud that the single best measure of the economy is the stock market. I didn’t think of that. Well, if that’s true, look at the stock market now. It’s higher than ever,” Biden said.

Biden’s second appearance in Virginia for McAuliffe, despite coming just across the river and just a snap from the Pentagon, shows a full-court press approach to national Democrats for fear of losing the race in an embarrassing anxiety. The defeat in Virginia, where state elections outside of the year used to be the barometer for midterm elections, will damage Biden’s image and Democratic enthusiasm.

The president is just the latest in a parade of Democrats approaching McAuliffe in the critical final weeks of the toss-up campaign.

Former President Barack Obama campaigned with McAuliffe in Richmond over the weekend, and Vice President Kamala Harris campaigned for McAuliffe last week in addition to filming an ad “Souls to the Polls” that will be play in black churches.

Stacey Abrams, a former Georgia gubernatorial nominee, traveled to Virginia to campaign for McAuliffe, and music producer Pharrell Williams is also set to show up.

Meanwhile, Youngkin did not bring in high-profile Republicans to campaign for him in the final days of the campaign. McAuliffe’s campaign efforts to tie Youngkin to Trump reached out to Sonya Royster, an undecided voter and small business owner from Loudoun County who cited one of McAuliffe’s ads highlighting Youngkin as telling a radio host that Trump represents “too much is why I’m running.”

Royster said he went to the rally on Tuesday to ask for more information about McAuliffe and he didn’t realize Biden was there until later. As for Biden’s performance so far, he’ll give it a “B” grade because he sees “what he’s trying to do” and “what he’s inherited, and he’s done a lot to try to boost the economy.”

Charlotte Morris, who attended the rally with Royster, said she planned to vote for McAuliffe but had a more critical review of Biden. “I think, I’ll give him, like, a C+ because he didn’t have a chance to do a lot of things,” he said.
