Kinzinger retires from Congress, vowing ‘broader nationwide fight’ against Trumpism

“There’s little or no desire to bridge our differences, and unity is no longer a word we use,” Kinzinger said. “It has become increasingly clear that to break the narrative, I cannot focus on both a re -election in Congress and a broader nationwide fight.”

Kinzinger, who is friendly to LaHood, has faced difficult opportunities for a return to Congress after he spent most of his last few years criticizing the president, who still holds a tight grip on the GOP election.

For months now questions have been circulating about Kinzinger’s fate in Congress as he has leaned heavily on his criticisms of Trump as well as some of his own GOP colleagues. His decision to join the select committee on Jan. 6, in appointing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, further complicated his relations with Congress.

Conservatives on the far-right-which Kinzinger once lined up-praised his decision.

Members of the House Freedom Caucus held press conferences calling on GOP leader Kevin McCarthy to approve a conference resolution that would effectively remove Kinzinger and Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), Another prominent Trump critic, from their duties on the committee for taking their seats on the panel reviewing the Capitol insurrection.

“Sadly since coming to Congress in January, I have personally seen Rep. Kinzinger and Cheney do more to hurt the Republican conference than help them while working for Adam Schiff and Nancy Pelosi,” freshman Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) Kinzinger, too, fought against some of his fiercest critics, launching his Country First PAC, designed to help other GOP candidates vote to impeach Trump.

Although Kinzinger slammed Democrats and Republicans in his pre-recorded remarks Friday for appealing to their parties as “most motivated and extreme elements,” he appears to be specifically referring to Trump’s political style and the divisions caused by the lies in the election of the former president.

“We allow leaders to reach power, sell the delusion that power comes from insulting others and dehumanizing those others think, act or think than us,” he said. “As a nation, we have fallen into those lies. And now, we are faced with a poisonous nation full of anger that is blinding our ability to achieve true strength.”

Gonzalez announced his retirement last month before Ohio completed its redistricting process. He already faces a challenge from former Trump official Max Miller.

The other eight pro-impeachment Republicans have different prospects of reelection. Cheney has a challenger endorsed by the former president. Rep. Tom Rice of South Carolina has a well -funded opponent. Sina Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler and Dan Newhouse of Washington and Rep. David Valadao of California lives in states with all-party primaries that can boost their possibilities.

Sina Rep. Peter Meijer and Fred Upton of Michigan and John Katko of New York all live in states that have not yet completed their redistricting process.

Kinzinger, first elected in 2010, was a former Air Force pilot who relied heavily on his military background in his first campaign. And he is no stranger to undesirable redistricting. A decade ago, he contacted Republican Rep. Don Manzullo, who was twice his age and had previously represented more of the current territory. Kinzinger beat Manzullo in a primary, however, 54 percent to 46 percent.

While his retirement serves as an additional signal to Republicans that there is less room in the GOP for those who choose to break away from Trump, even if he is not in office, Kinzinger said he is not done yet. And he has not excluded bids for other, higher offices, including the governor’s seat, Senate or possibly more.

“I want to clarify: This is not the end of my political future, but the beginning,” he said in the video.
