Facebook – I mean, Meta

Facebook announced this week that it has changed its name to Meta to better reflect its focus on the metaverse-a virtual, cohesive “world” that residents can access through devices such as headsets or mirrors.

Last week, I wrote that Facebook’s metaverse plans are supposed to inspire you in some way. But I also said that the company’s disturbing record of manipulating its users should really frighten anyone living in the new world it is trying to create.

Democratic Conservative Senates

Both Democratic Sens Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Cinema of Arizona accepted their roles as foils to progressives during negotiations about President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better plan this week.

Manchin used his power as one of two Democratic holdouts to stop major social programs in the bill, while Sinema reportedly used his power to possibly tank a plan to lower prescription drug costs popular with his state of Arizona.

Together, they significantly reduced a popular bill, benefiting themselves and their wealthy donors in the energy and pharmaceutical sectors. Oh, the creeps!

Cruel disobedience to Covid

Earlier this week, it was reported that Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo was booted from a meeting with an immunocompromised state senator after refusing to wear a mask.

Ladapo, who often spreads vaccine and mask -related conspiracy theories, has been a reliable sidekick to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, on his opposition to public health measures. There is nothing more frightening than having conspiracy theorists at the wheel during a pandemic.

Gridiron Gaslighting

This week, National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell said the league would not release a report on its investigation into sexual harassment and abuse committed by Washington Football Team executives. Goodell said the league will not release a report to “protect” people who have told stories of misconduct, despite some of them requesting that the results be shared publicly.

But the league’s excuse here is weak and unbelievable. Team owners – fearful of harmful information that the investigation may have unearthed – have the most incentive to keep the results confidential. Pretending to sympathize with victims of harassment to defend powerful executives? No question, one of the scariest stories of the week.
