The shiny chrome, six-foot-tall letters spelling the name of the former U.S. president on West Georgia Street still remain, quite unbelievably, in place.

More than a year has passed since the company operated the Trump International Hotel in Vancouver and issued a license to use the Trump brand for it, declared bankruptcy and closed its doors in August 2020.
Now, in recent months, the strata council of privately owned, expensive apartment condo units in the tower has pressed Holborn Properties, which owns the building, to eventually remove Trump signage.

There was controversy and calls against the signage giant when the 69-story luxury hotel opened in 2017 amid protests against the election of US President Donald Trump.
At the time, the strata even voted to protect itself against the negative risk associated with Trump’s branding by increasing its insurance coverage for terrorism.

Since then, the list of voices calling for the removal of Trump’s name in one of the tallest and most prominent locations in the downtown building has included former mayors, city councilors, chief planners, construction workers, marketing professors, urban planners, activists and others, not to mention many regular citizens.

Minutes of the meeting from June 2021 obtained by Postmedia said that “the strata council requested the removal of large TRUMP signage from the entrance to West Georgia.”
“The current bankruptcy remains and some of the TRUMP related branding, at the West Georgia Street level has begun to be removed; similar to the Spa By Ivanka signage in front of hotel doors. A meeting with Hotel -related parties (is) expected in the autumn while the rebranding and reopening of the closed hotel and related facilities is expected to take place in the new year, ”noted the minutes of the strata council meeting from August 2021.

In September, Holborn CEO Joo Kim Tiah personally met with other strata council executives, “acknowledging that (it) has concerns about branding and the current state of the hotel property and any possible reopening of plans, “according to strata meeting minutes.
This part of the meeting was brought “on camera” so there weren’t too many new details recorded in the meeting notes.
However, priority action items brought down in writing include keeping residents updated on “news about new or returning tenants … (and) branding and any signage removal associated with the former Trump hotel entity. “

The sign at 1161 West Georgia was made and placed in accordance with the City’s sign bylaw and a permit is required to place a new or replacement sign, according to the city.

A spokesman said the sign was for the entire building and while the hotel was closed, residences were open and the city had not received an application to remove or replace the existing sign.
Asked this week whether or when Trump’s capital letters will be removed, Joo Kim Tiah told Postmedia that “he cannot comment at this time.”
