New Donald Trump’s Saturday Night Live blew up Marvel’s Eternals

Saturday Night Live debuted the new Donald Trump on Saturday night, with newcomer show James Austin Johnson filling the role previously played by Alec Baldwin. In the cold opening of the show — the fifth half of the season — Johnson’s Trump quickly ran into a variety of pop culture topics, including Eternals and its current status with critics.

“You know with Eternals, it was too diverse and no one wants to see that. The film is rotten, you just ask about the tomatoes,” Johnson’s character said in the sketch. You can see the whole bit below.

At this writing, Marvel Studios ’latest feature is rated 48-percent“ Rotten ”on Rotten Tomatoes. Not only does that make the film — from Oscar-winning Chloe Zhao, however — the lowest-rated film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s the only film in the franchise with the aforementioned “Rotten” designation.

As the site itself says, Eternals is an “ambitious superhero epic that shines just as often as it does, Eternals taking the MCU in intriguing-and sometimes confusing-new directions.”

ComicBook.com’s Jamie Jirak was more positive about the flick, rating it four out of five stars in his official review.

“One of the biggest strengths of Eternals is quite a weakness as well. The film stands completely on its own, which means you hardly need any MCU knowledge to follow,” Jirak wrote.

He added, “On the one hand, this is one of the more refreshing and intriguing things about Phase Four. Eternals proves that the MCU can take big risks and completely go anywhere. On the other hand, disconnecting of Eternals from the rest of the franchise makes it less watchable than most of the films before.Hopefully, the film will be more important to the overall MCU arc, but for now, it seems like a distant cousin than a part of the family.Of course, there are still fun mid-credit and post-credit scenes that will inspire you for the future.

Eternals is now in theaters while Shang-Chi and Legend of the Ten Rings will be available for Disney+ subscribers to stream on November 12th.
